If you want to increase the traffic and subscribers to your blog, taking a look at its usability level can be key for a better user experience. If a casual sees that a blog matches his interests and can engage with is in a simple, intuitive manner, chances are that he’ll be back, at the expense of other more confusing sources of information. This article explains 5 key points to improve the usability on your blog. Don’t make them guess
If your blog doesn’t have a clear topic or subject that visitors can grasp in a seconds, they may leave thinking it was a mistake of the search engine that sent them there. Maybe your blog is highly topical, but they happened to land on a page about an unrelated subject and couldn’t spend the time to verify if it was, indeed, the blog they were looking for. It’s easy to make it clear what your blog is about. Just add a couple sentences about it on the sidebar, choose a web design that matches your target niche, or add a slogan to your logo that catches visitor’s attention.
Engage with your visitors
A blog isn’t a one way conversation, and one of the best things of having a blog is being able to engage with your audience via comments. Encourage comments and answer when somebody starts a conversation about your article, and you may make a subscriber out of a casual visitor that found a post interesting. There’s no better way to lose subscribers than making them feel like they are talking to a wall. Of course, comments aren’t without danger and you should take steps to prevent spam on your blog and learn to deal with negative comments in an adult and polite way.
Encourage them to subscribe
If you want your visitors to subscribe to your blog and come back each time you produce new reading material, you need to make it easy for them to do so. To do this, enable RSS feeds and show a prominent link on each of your posts, preferibly with a logo that people can associate with the standard RSS orange logo. Remember, if somebody has to think or search around to be able to do something, chances are they won’t and you will have lost an opportunity for a recurring visitor.
Tell them who are you
Even if the subject is professional, a blog is often a very personal thing, that reflects the personality of the blogger. If you include an about page on your blog people will more easily put a face to your posts, and will be more likely to like your blog. At the very least, it will establish your degree of authority on the subject. You don’t need to be extremely detailed or personal, but explaining that you have been in business for 20 years will surely lead some weight to your blog posts.
Make it easy to share
Social Media and Social Bookmarking are increasingly important as a promotion tool for blogs and business websites. You can encourage your visitors to share your articles by displaying links to Twitter, Facebook or Digg along with the post. Many networking and bookmarking sites offer widgets that can be pasted on a website to prepopulate the submission forms, and if you are using a blogging software such as wordpress there’s plugins that will display any imaginable social bookmarking and sharing tool in existence wherever you want to.
Following the above usability tips will help you keep visitors interested in your business blog, subscribe so they can come back for more content, engage with you and share your content with other potential readers. The best bit? Those usability improvements can be implemented in less than 2 hours in most major blogging software systems. What are you waiting for?
